The Lima Police Department got to know families over a cup of coffee and a happy meal.

The Coffee with a Cop 6th annual Summer Safety Festival took place today at the N. West St. McDonald’s. The LPD spent time chatting with kids and their families, and also educated them on how they can stay safe during the summer. The event is one of the ways the department can connect with their community and find out what they can do to better serve the people in it.

“No police department can be successful without the help of the community they serve, and this is just way of helping to build some of that support in that relationship building,” says Chief of Police Kevin Martin. “It builds better channels of communication so that we can get information about what’s going on in town, the concerns of people so that we  can make better decisions as to how to apply our resources.”

Chief Martin said that even with a little bit of rain early on they still had a steady stream of families stopping in to see them.
