Waco Police officers had their coffee and doughnuts at Shipley Do-Nuts in Hewitt Thursday morning with members of the community.

It was all part of a nationwide event known as “Coffee with a Cop.”

Waco Police Sergeant Patrick Swanton said the department brought the event to Waco because they want to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and the public. He said the local relationship is already a strong one, but it could always be improved.

Judge Vikram Deivanayagam got his three kids up early to stop by the event.

“Fostering some community understanding between the law enforcement and the people — it’s a great thing and at this point we need more of that,” Deivanayagam said.

He added that while his children were more excited about the doughnuts than they were to hang out with the officers, they enjoyed their time when they got there.

“It’s really fun coming before school because I get doughnuts and this usually doesn’t happen…the cops are really fun,” his daughter Emry said.

Sgt. Swanton said the Waco community could expect more events like Coffee with a Cop. He said the police department received very a positive reaction from the public, and they are already considering future ideas.
