From the rank and file, to police brass, and even the commissioner himself, Yonkers police stepped away from their precincts for a couple of hours this morning to take part in the department’s annual “Coffee with a Cop” program.
“Community policing means working in partnership with your community to address crime on a multi-level plane,” He explains. “It’s not strictly enforcing or arresting your way out of a problem, it’s building bridges – building trust – and finding out the root causes of issues to solve them holistically.”
Greeley police officers always have to be able to think on their feet. Coffee with a Cop — where residents come and go freely to talk with local police officers — is no exception.
Truckies were invited to the event held at BP Eastern Creek and encouraged to ask questions, clarify issues and address concerns directly with police in a positive, informal setting.
The Waco Police Department, the Hewitt Police Department and the Woodway Department of Public Safety hosted the second “Coffee with a Cop” community meeting of 2018 at the Whataburger off of Hewitt Drive on Thursday. The event series began on national “Coffee with a Cop” day last year and has become a community favorite.
“It’s probably my favorite event because we get to visit with our community and sometimes we talk about community concerns but a lot of us are Aggies so we talk Aggies sports, Aggie football and stuff like that,” said Richardson.
“Lots of times they tell us thank you. We have a lot in common from sharing experiences from being students at Texas A&M together to working here and they realize that we have a lot in common with each other,” Richardson said.
“Community policing is something that area police departments have latched onto and it’s a great way where we can communicate with the community,” Lacy Lakeview Police Chief John Truehitt said. “The more we know each other, the more people get to understand what we do, how we do it, and it’s safer for us and our community.”
