Last week in Mackay, and throughout Queensland, police have been engaging with all sorts of road users to draw attention to Road Safety.
Police visited schools, community groups, lead motor bike rides, engaged with pedestrians, met shoppers in shopping centres, walked to school with students and chatted with truck drivers on the highway.
At all of these engagement activities the theme ‘Speak up for Road Safety’ resonated throughout each event.
One of the final events for Mackay this year was a Coffee with a cop after cyclist’s morning ride.
This excited Senior Constable Steve Smith as he was able to dust off his Lycra bike gear and get ready for his normal early morning caffeine hit all in one!
Once I explained that we were not the riding to the coffee shop he was a little disappointed but I still suspect he wore his lycra under his uniform!
Once we had arrived and set up our gear the first “Peloton” arrived we then got down to work, talking about road safety and discussing “danger” points on their journey.
Not long after the first another “Peloton” rounded the corner taking the total of Lycra clad riders to over 50!
Acting Superintendent Steve O’Connell was available throughout the morning and said this was the first Selfie frame photo he had been in, you can see his delight.
Seriously now, we all have to keep road safety in the forefront of our mind 52 weeks of the year not just during Queensland Road Safety Week.
All road users are responsible for their own behaviour and removing the Fatal Five behaviours from our driving behaviour will surely keep us all safer.
