An Albuquerque intersection plagued by crime for years is finally seeing some improvement.

APD held one of its Coffee With a Cop events Thursday at the McDonald’s on Central and Wyoming, an area police say used to be a hotbed of criminal activity like drugs and fights.

However, residents report improvements since the city removed a bus stop shelter to make it a less attractive place to hang out.

The McDonald’s also upgraded its security to include a 24-hour security guard, and a noise repellent system.

“Since that, huge increase in the community coming back to the restaurant, feeling safer, not having a fear of parking,” franchise owner Noel de la Riva said.

APD says calls to the area have dropped 34 percent in the last six months.
