Coffee with a cop, or two or three

Steven Jenney had a cup of coffee in his hands, but he wanted something else from the city of Batavia police officers Friday morning.
“I want a picture with them,” he said. “They do a great job.”
Which was nice to hear.
Jenney was one of many customers at Tim Horton’s who came for Coffee with a Cop, a nationwide program that began in 2011 in Hawthorne, Calif. and has since spread to all 50 states. This year, Oct. 7 was officially designated as Coffee with a Cop Day.
“We’re a little behind,” Chief Shawn Heubusch said. “We thought it was a real good idea and it’s good community outreach. So they put this together. Better late than never.”
Coffee with a Cop went from 8 to 10 a.m., with a steady stream of customers stopping by to talk to officers, grab a doughnut, decals, wrist bands and magnets.
“Some people had questions and concerns about municipal issues,” Officer Marc Lawrence said. “Things like traffic and trash pickups and the status of the new police station.”
Heubusch said the event was successful and will be done again next year, most likely on Oct. 7.
