Metro communities are continuing to show strong support for their local police departments this week.

Johnston’s monthly “Coffee with a Cop” event saw larger crowds Friday morning, even with officers from other departments showing up. The “Coffee with a Cop” program is designed to show the community the “officer behind the badge,” building relationships between police and the citizens they serve. Officers from the Des Moines and Urbandale Police Departments were present to show support for their Johnston comrades. People from outside Johnston showed up to show appreciation, as well.

“There are more people, you know obviously what’s happened this week probably has some influence on that,” said Lt. Lynn Aswegan with Johnston PD. “But there’s just been an overwhelming amount of support from the community, both before this incident, as well as after this incident. It’s very inspiring, humbling, and overwhelming.”

This was Johnston’s second month hosting the program.
