Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station Capt. Josh Thai visited Malibu’s new Caffe Luxxe Wednesday, June 7, for Coffee with a Cop.

The Malibu Chamber of Commerce event served as an opportunity for Malibu residents to meet the new captain, as well as an opportunity to discuss public safety.

“Public safety in Malibu is supported by a coalition of engaged residents, visitors, the City, professional law enforcement and public-minded organizations like the Chamber and Red Cross,” Thai said at the event. “Obviously, we cannot be everywhere 24-7, so the LA County Sheriff Department depends on our local partners to be our local eyes and ears.  Basically, if you see something, say something.”

Thai said local concerns include emergency preparedness training for earthquakes and major interruptions in utilities.

“When the bad thing happens, all of us need to be aware, prepared and equipped to survive at least three days without first responder help,” Thai warned. “This includes your pets as well.”

Conversation also touched upon safety on PCH, a topic close to the heart for attendee Michel Shane, whose daughter, Emily Shane was killed while crossing PCH in 2010.

“Since our daughter’s tragic death walking along PCH nearly seven years ago, almost nothing has been done to make this roadway safer for pedestrians, bike riders or motorists,” Michel said at the event. “When are Caltrans and the City of Malibu going to take this ongoing threat to public safety seriously? How many more kids and older folks have to die on PCH before we act?”

Malibu’s Fireball Tim Lawrence also had vintage cop cars on display, courtesy of the Automobile Driving Museum.
