The Bernardsville Police Department hosted a “Coffee with a Cop” event at Bernards High School on Jan. 11.
Officers from Bernardsville were joined in the cafeteria by officers from Far Hills, Bedminster and Peapack-Gladstone. They met with students, staff and faculty for a meet-and-greet with no specific agenda.
It was the second Coffee with a Cop event. The first was held last year at the Bernardsville Fire House. The Jan. 11 event was coordinated with students from the Veteran’s Outreach Club at Bernards High and DARE Officer Scott Chertoff.
Chief Kevin Valentine credited students Jack Topping and Luke Stauffer for making the event at the high school happen.
“Jack Topping of Bedminster reached out to the police department in a show of support and the rest is history,” Valentine said.
The event was held before the start of the regular school day and was attended by students and faculty along with Principal Scott Nigel. Community partners that helped make the event possible include the Somerset Hills School District, the Bernards Lions Club, the Bagel Bin and Duck Donuts.
“Coffee with a Cop is part of a National Program designed to bring members of the community and police together in a neighborly way,” said Valentine. “We hope that this event takes a step toward meeting that goal.”
The department plans to host several more events in the coming months at various other locations with senior citizens, students, business groups and other community organizations. Anyone interested in hosting an event should contact Valentine or Chertoff at the police department at (908) 766-0037.
