The Topeka Police Department is melting barriers over ice cream!

Officers Wednesday debuted a new take on their “Coffee with a Cop” replacing the hot drinks with a cool treat.

“During the summer on the hot days, we got into brainstorm and said, ‘Let’s do ice cream cones with a cop,’” Major Darin Scott said. “It’s a chance for people to get and mingle with police officers and see us on a level that they can talk and interact and build those partnerships that we need.”

It wasn’t just the idea of cooling off with ice cream that brought Josh Miller and his family out to the Dairy Queen on 17th and Medford. He thought it was important for his kids to meet police.

“We also like to get to know the officers, especially for little kids, to teach them that they’re here to keep everybody safe and they’re not anything to be scared of,” Miller said. “They’re just people like us, they’ve just taken on an oath to protect us and taken on a responsibility that they can be put in danger and we’re safe.”

This DQ’s central location also allows police to get into neighborhoods and not just on the main streets.
