Apopka clergy, police plan prayer for Dallas officers killed in attack

Apopka law enforcement and community members on Saturday will gather in prayer for the police officers killed and wounded in a Texas sniper attack.

City police Chief Mike McKinley wrote in an email that the moment of remembrance will happen during one of the “Coffee with a Cop” meetings he holds every few weeks to hear citizen input.

“The men and women of the Apopka Police Department appreciate the tremendous support we receive from the community,” McKinley wrote.

Members of the South Apopka Ministerial Alliance sent out an email encouraging attendance.

The group will gather from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the McDonald’s at 233 E. Main Street. The prayer for Dallas victims, local law enforcement and community healing is scheduled for 9 a.m.

“Now is not a time for divisiveness,” the Alliance’s email stated. “Please don’t think your presence won’t matter, it is strength in numbers, and we are stronger together.”

Five Dallas officers were killed and seven others were wounded by sniper fire during a Thursday protest, according to the Los Angeles Times.
