A new tradition is getting underway in Clarkstown today as the police department held its first-ever “Coffee with a Cop.”

Residents turned out to the McDonald’s in Nyack to meet with officers, discuss ideas and get to know each other better, all while enjoying some coffee.

That’s the whole idea behind Coffee with a Cop, a nationwide mission to bring police officers and community members together.

Clarkstown police say they also wanted to hold the event to help attract young men and women who may be interested in joining the department.

Residents tell News 12 they’re glad they came and are impressed by how much the department cares about the community. “Police officers do care. They really do care. They want to do the right thing. They want to be out there. They are stretching out an olive branch saying I’m there for year,” said one participant.

Clarkstown police are already calling this first “Coffee with Cop” a success and say they will hold another one this summer.
