The Albuquerque Police Department is working to bridge the gap between its officers and the deaf/hard of hearing community.

To that end, morning APD held its very first Coffee with a Cop event tailored towards meeting people with hearing or visual impairments on Saturday morning.

APD partnered with the New Mexico Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to collaborate on the initiative. Sign language interpreters were on hand to assist officers in answering questions.

“We plan on having one of these every few months throughout Albuquerque, are going to be reaching out to Santa Fe, Las Cruces and other parts of the state so they can get law enforcement involved statewide,” said Nicole Chavez-Lucero, manager of the APD Community Policing Council.

The next Coffee with a Cop event will be announced on APD’s Facebook page. Everyone is welcome to attend.
