Coffee with a Cop was held with a unique twist on Friday afternoon.

For the first time, a local high school hosted the event, as La Cueva High School students got the chance to sit down with the officers that watch over them.

The event comes at a time when school safety is on the minds of many students and teachers, with national and local demonstrations organized this weekend to call for reform.

“It provides a little security and we get to know the people that are protecting us out there in our community,” said La Cueva student Kyle Chandler.

APD Officer Russ Alberti added that a big part of their participation is connecting with students face-to-face.

“To let them know that we’re here to help them,” he said. “That’s why everyone becomes a police officer – it’s to serve the community.”

Police say they also hope to inspire some students to become police officers when they graduate.
