As part of the station’s community outreach, and familiarizing residents with assigned Crime Prevention Unit Zone Leader, Rooney met with residents as the CPU leader for the Castaic-Val Verde region.

“So, there’s eight zones,” said Rooney, “(and) we work out of the same building so that overall, we can identify trends that’s targeting all the valley, so when the weekly stats come up and the crimes come up we are all together in one area talking, communicating with each other to see if we notice things that are happening in all of the zones.”

The morning meet was one of two planned for Wednesday, with another meeting scheduled for 4-6 p.m., also at “It’s a Grind Coffee House,” for anyone who missed the morning opportunity.

Some community members took the chance to voice concerns and plans specific to their neighborhoods, which is one of the ideas behind the meetings, and the CPU program in general. One resident discussed concerns about speeding drivers near school zones, for example.

Lewis was also available to go over how the Crime Suppression Program works in the community to keep the neighborhoods safe.

“These events are critical,” said Lewis. “The goal of these meetings is for the community to come out and meet the deputy in charge of their zone deputy and identify their ‘zone deputy.’ I truly believe the community needs to have someone they can contact that they know and actually knows their area.”

The Crime Prevention Unit works in conjunction with neighborhood watch programs to identify threats in zones and report it to the zone leaders.

Neighborhood watch programs are assembled by neighborhood president and members of that area. Anyone interested in organizing a neighborhood watch program can contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Crime Prevention Unit at 661-255-1121 or you can visit the city of Santa Clarita website.
