The York City Police Department is working to get more connected with the community it serves.

Saturday it hosted “Coffee with a Cop” at I-ron-ic coffee shop on West Philadelphia Street.

The event is meant to help break down barriers of communication between the department and residents and get to know each other better.

“Our hopes are that it will become a normal thing to see a police officer, in uniform and not in uniform and to be able to approach them and say I have a question about this or about that or even just a hi or hello,” said York City Police Chief Troy Bankert.

The department’s next community outreach event is May 2. It’s called “Cops and Lobsters” and will be held at the Red Lobster on East Market Street.

That event is also a fundraiser for the York County Special Olympics.
